Wegner Alinghi Yachtsman Multitool
I’m sitting at home watching race 2 of the America’s Cup (Episodes of the event have been stacking up in my TiVO so no spoilers, please!) when I see a commercial for one of the coolest pieces of gear I’ve seen in a while. It is the Wegner Alinghi Yachtsman tool.
Wegner has been in business since 1893 and is the manufacturer of the original Swiss Army Knife. They have teamed up with Alinghi, the defending champion of the America’s Cup, to develop a sailor’s knife.
Not only is this knife mean looking with it’s shark-like profile (not to mention the cache of the America’s cup champion connection), but it looks extremely functional. The serrated main blade locks into place preventing inadvertent closing of the blade as you are struggling to cut through a line in an emergency.
Additionally, the knife is designed for single-handed operation. This alone has me thinking of buying one for the boat and leaving my Swiss Champ SOS set (made by Victorinox, the other Swiss Army knife company) only for the mountains. Even though I am not a sailor anymore, there has been many an occasion fishing on the Potomac when I’ve wished I could open my knife with one hand.
