I hate yard work!

Well, it’s that time of year again! Even though the weather here in the mid-Atlantic US is still warm and sunny, there are many indications that fall is just around the corner (such as the fact that it’s pitch black when I wake up to go to work and I only have a couple of hours before the sun sets in the evenings).

Typically, this is the time to try to cram in a few more outdoor activities before the long winter makes us lament the trips not taken and the things not done when it was warm outside. For me, however, this year it is time to do yard work. (Ugh!) In all honesty, I shouldn’t complain. Even though I did not undertake any overseas trips this year, my summer has been filled with diverse activities. From my road trip to Canada for the Grand Prix, to off-roading in rural Maryland and a high-performance driving class in West Virginia, my weekends, especially in September, have been filled with fun things to do.

Despite this, I hate yard work. I realize that some people enjoy growing things and find it extremely fulfilling but for me it is just hard work. What makes it even worse is the thought that I am wasting away perfectly good weather instead of being out there doing things I enjoy. Oh well, hopefully winter will stay away a little longer yet and I can get a few more things done while at the same time having a yard that looks somewhat presentable for next year. (Right now it looks like we are living in an abandoned house. Perhaps a reflection of too much time spent having fun?)

Even if winter does come quickly, I guess it will give me a chance to regroup, plan and dream for the upcoming year. During these times, the internet often becomes an invaluable tool not only to help research upcoming adventures but to provide inspiration as well as simply to prevent one from going stir crazy. In fact, I recently stumbled upon a site that I am sure I will be revisiting time and time again this winter.

A Photo A Day From Planet Earth is a site that features daily photos from all over the world. Looking at the archives I can see beautifully shot scenes of the Norwegian countryside, the Taj Mahal, Buddhist temples, ornate European architecture, breathtaking dessert-scapes, among many more. Looking at beautiful photographs of exotic places as well as watching videos and listening to travel accounts is one my favorite pastimes when I can’t be out there exploring myself.
