Airstream Basecamp Now In Stock… Or So They Say

We were really excited about the introduction of the Airstream Basecamp. This trailer not only represents an innovative approach to RV and toy hauler design but it’s just plain cool. For months RV circles in the web were filled with speculation about the new trailer but all that has been available until now are a few snapshots and an entry on the company’s Buzz news section of their website.
Although the Basecamp came out as a 2006 model, one would be hard pressed to find one in a dealer last year, especially in the East Coast. We asked at our local Airstream dealer and they told us they wouldn’t stock the model and it was unclear whether they could order one for us. The latest Airstreamer newsletter has announced that the 2007 Basecamp is now available and Airstream has a new website exclusively for this model. The new website sounds like a smart move since this model is unlikely to appeal to the typical “rolling mansion†RV crowd.
At a base price of around $22,000, the Basecamp is not cheap. Airstream has a longstanding reputation for quality and produces some of the most innovative designs in America, such as the Sprinter Westfalia-a joint venture with the famed European camper conversion firm. Products such as these are geared for more active RVers and those who wish to explore beyond the bounds of the usual organized campgrounds. It remains to be seen whether the Basecamp will sell in the ‘States
where fuel is still relatively cheap and competition from larger models with more amenities may eat away at the Basecamp’s market share.
